From Garden to Soap: Creating Seasonal Garden Soaps
Share
Every summer, my husband’s garden seems to take on a life of its own.
What starts as a few small plants quickly grows into baskets overflowing with tomatoes, carrots, squash, pumpkins, and other fresh vegetables. By the end of the season, we’re busy harvesting, preserving, and canning as much as possible to enjoy throughout the year.
One year, after spending months canning fruits and vegetables from our garden, I found myself wondering:
Could some of these same ingredients be used in handmade soap?
That question led me down a fascinating path of research and experimentation. I began exploring ways to incorporate vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, and pumpkin into my soap recipes.
The results were better than I ever expected.
Many garden soap recipes are made with plant-based oils, making them an excellent option for those who prefer vegan-friendly bath and body products. The vegetables themselves contribute natural color to the soap, eliminating the need for artificial colorants while creating beautiful earthy shades inspired by nature.
So far, I’ve created soaps featuring carrots, tomatoes, and pumpkin.
Each has produced a firm, long-lasting bar that feels gentle and nourishing on the skin. One of my favorite things about these soaps is that their colors come directly from the ingredients themselves. The warm orange tones of carrots and pumpkin and the soft hues created by tomatoes give each batch a unique, natural beauty.
The most challenging part isn’t creating the soap—it’s finding the perfect fragrance to complement each garden ingredient.
For my carrot and tomato soaps, I chose orange essential oil. The bright citrus scent pairs surprisingly well with the natural sweetness of the vegetables and creates a fresh, uplifting experience.
For pumpkin soap, pumpkin spice fragrance oil was the obvious choice. Its warm, cozy aroma perfectly captures the feeling of autumn and harvest season.
There’s something especially rewarding about creating a product that begins in the garden and ends as a handcrafted bar of soap. It reminds me that inspiration can come from unexpected places and that some of the best ingredients are often growing right outside our back door.
Each seasonal garden soap is a celebration of homegrown ingredients, handmade craftsmanship, and the simple joy of creating something useful from nature’s bounty.
I can’t wait to see what next year’s garden inspires.
